The internet is the greatest creation of man kind since…..well let’s not make this complicated it is the greatest creation of mankind.
First let’s get a little history of the internet and how it began. The US government, or rather the military says it created the internet witch they called ARPANET, which is true to a degree but they had limited success until a European lab called CERN launched the World Wide Web initiative.
Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet for more information or look it up yourself, that’s a great thing about the internet you can find this information in seconds.
Now we got to why the internet is important. Nothing has so unified humanity as the internet, or World Wide Web has done. In the past before the 1980s when the internet started to pick up (in 1989 there were only 100,000 users) the only way to get in touch with someone was to see them in person or call them. Travel takes a long time and although there were fax machines not many people had them, so sending documents and communicating was hard. We take modern communication for granted, now we can communicate in a plethora of different ways and through different mediums. For example right now I am communicating though this Blog, at this moment I am also tweeting, instant messaging and, sending an email. What does all of this communication mean though? As I said in the beginning, nothing has so unified humanity as the internet, we can now get to know people we have never met from other states or even other countries in the blink of an eye. This means as a people we can now study ideas from the vastly different points of views of other cultures, and given enough time humanity through this communication will come to understand these other cultures and begin to see ourselves as part of the human race instead of countries or states. While it is true that there is a lot of false information on the internet there has always been false information and as in the past people must take it upon themselves to find the truth, but unlike the past it is much easier to search for the truth now. What would have taken hours in a library with possibly outdated information can be done on the internet quickly and from your own home.
I believe that as the internet starts to grow more, humanity will grow with it.
