Let us say that I was a book, and not only that but the last book of that kind in existence. What would I be?
I would be my favorite type of course, a fantasy novel. People will always need fantasy if just to imagine a better world than our own. The world we live in is drab in comparison to the worlds of imagination and magic that has spawned from the human mind. Some people just need to imagine something better sometimes, a world without limits where even gravity may be nullified and the natural laws of the world do not exist. However these books are farther reaching than giving someone an escape from the norm. When a child reads a fantasy book he truly believes these things can happen, and if enough children read them they might think less of our own world limits in the future and end up inventing or creating wonderful things, perhaps they may even grow up to be a novelist.
Imagination is a thing people are in dire need of in todays world. A world where book reading is at a low and most people sit home and watch TV or browse the internet for hours upon hours. When you read you exorcise your mind and your creative impulses, there is not TV to show you what the characters look like and there is no sound to let you hear their voices, all of that must come from your imagination.
Let’s take Harry Potter and Twilight for example. Thousands of people read those very popular books and they stirred the imagination of many other people. If you had walked into Barnes and Noble when Harry Potter was popular you would have seen a lot of new novels about wizards on the shelves, and you can still see all of the vampire books that people wrote after Twilight came out.
bookshopblog.com kind of shows how many vampire books came at or around the same time as twilight, but who knows twilight might have been influenced by one of these.
All in all we need fantasy to at least keep some of our creative spirit going.
